Nina Simone: Four Women

Saturday, March 19, 2016 - 7:30pm

“My skin is brown, my manner is tough…” Nina Simone’s velvet voice was unafraid to sing lyrics that cut right to the truth. From the iconic “I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl” to “Sinnerman,” and the “Four Women” of the title, her music saturates this exploration of her artistry and fight for civil rights. Simone’s lyrics weave a story of women too often left “alienated and really low” by their own movement. Through it all, they remain triumphant – four women proud “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” and sometimes even “Feelin’ Good.” Regina Williams returns to Park Square as the dynamic woman who raised her voice on behalf of all women made silent.“All I want is equality for my sister, my brother, my people and me…” - Nina Simon, “Mississippi Goddam”
