Cuban Music Group Tiempo Libre On KFAI

Tiempo Libre, the three-time Grammy nominated Cuban music group, will be featured on KFAI's  Corazon Latino, Tuesday, January 7 - Noon - 2pm.

Jorge Gomez, musical director of Tiempo Libre, will talk with Corazon Latino host Eve MacLeash, bringing listeners up-to-date on the group's upcoming performance at The Dakota on Sunday, January 12th, in celebration of Cuba's musical heritage.

Music isn't just a way of life for Tiempo Libre, it's a way of experiencing living. When the Cuban government forbade its citizens to listen to American radio during the time when members of Tiempo Libre were teenagers, they would make a radio antenna out of clothes hangers and salvaged aluminum foil - so they could go to a rooftop and tune into the music which pulsated from Miami airwaves. The group's latest timba recording, "My Secret Radio," features the seven musicans expressing the thrill they received from their secret rooftop radio sessions as well as the difficulties they faced having to start from scratch in America - a culture so foreign and different from Cuba.

Tune in Corazon Latino from Noon to 2:00 on Tuesday, Jan. 7 to hear the interview with Jorge Gomez.  Mr. Gomez was also recently interviewed by Janis Lane-Ewart on Collective Eye on Saturday, January 4. That interview is now available on the Collective Eye program archive.
