Somali Art Survives & Thrives With Support

When people fled Somalia during the civil war that started more than 25 years ago, art was something they had to leave behind.  But the artists fled with everyone else, and those artists continued to create in their new lands.

One of those artists lives here in Minnesota - his name is Hassan Noor.

The fact that a more mainstream Minnesota audience now knows about Hassan Noor can be traced, in part, to the involvement of Pam Gaard. Gaard is also an artist.  She recognized something special in Noor's work, and helped raise money to help him get necessary supplies and eventually, to have a show in a Twin Cities art gallery.

On the KFAI show "That Somali Program That Speaks With Funny English", host Abdirizak Bihi asked Gaard to talk about her enthusiasm for Hassan Noor's work.
